GREY GHOST - SNOW LEOPARD
"THE GRAY GHOST"
My main objective, when painting this particular Panthera Uncia, AKA the majestic Snow Leopard, was to make it look as if you, the viewer, could reach up into the fur - just under his chin - to feel the amazing soft bulk of his coat between your fingers and against the palm of your hand.
These magnificent cats, my favorite of all felids, which live in the snow-capped mountains of Central Asia, are known as "gray ghosts" or "ghost cats" because they hide themselves away from people and animals. When I painted this animal in 1993... the Snow Leopard was an endangered species. I am happy to say that is not the case anymore thanks to many pulling together to save the spotted cats. In all of the Snow Leopard's existence, there is not one piece of evidential history that shows an attack on a human being.
